In 2010 the rare 1936 dot penny fetched $402,500 at auction. One of only three known examples.
In April of 2013 one of the three known examples came up for auction. It is believed to be the most affordable of the three known, selling for $253,000 Canadian. This particular coin was once stolen and returned later. It was delivered back to the owner, a famous coin collector named John Pittmann, in an envelope with a scratch on the obverse. As a result this recently sold coin was the most affordable of the three in existence.
